Got this today, early this morning. She was in a tall tree earlier and then flew down to the bird bath. I watched her as she moved to the edge of the bird bath and knew she was getting ready for flight. Still didn't have shutter speed fast enough @ 1/800s as you will see she's slightly OOF.

Coming Home.

This was actually taken in August, 2015. It really is one of my favorites as I was quite pleased with the way it turned out. When I first spotted the gull, I was in the middle of swapping out lenses. No Exif data as this shot was on a color print.

Camera was a Nikon N8008s with a Nikon AFNikkor 70~210mm non D Lens. Ecola State Park, Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Thanks so much for viewing.

K-3 and DA* 60-250

The featureless sky made me think " B&W." Hope you agree.

Taken at Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach, Oregon. I was fortunate that this turned out as well as it did, because when I spotted the gull, I was in the middle of swapping out lenses.

Nikon D70 body with AFZoom 70~210mm non D lens.

Thanks so much for viewing.

This one I have been very pleased with the way it came out. The reason being is that when I first spotted the gull, I was right in the middle of swapping out lenses.

This shot was taken at Ecola State Park in Cannon Beach, Oregon, August of 2015.

No EXIF data except what I can recall. It was taken with a Nikon D70 body and a Nikon AFNikkor 70~210mm non D Lens.

Thanks so much for viewing.

A lot of motion going on there PL.

Interesting how 1/800s couldn't freeze the bird, but it caught the water droplets trailing behind.

We enjoyed the Birds of Prey show at Callaway Gardens. At one point this Barred Owl flew past me with his wing brushing my face.

This Harris's Hawk was fun to watch in flight.

We hadn't planned on going to Callaway so I only had my K3 with a Sigma 18-250 lens. I wish I had taken my SIgma 70-200 f/2.8.

I headed out today to see if any ospreys had returned from migration and sure enough, most of the nests along my route were occupied. Didn't get many shots but this one came out pretty well:

I also noticed a bird soaring very high up and a long ways off, that was being harassed by some ravens (or crows). Through the view finder I thought it might be a red tailed hawk but, now, looking at the images I think it could be a golden eagle.

Here are some 100% crops:

I used 1/1000 @ f/9.5, ISO 400, AF.C 27 points. Next I'm going to try 1/1500 @ f/11, AF.C 9 points. It's much more a matter of technique than equipment.

1/1000s is plenty fast for a gull. I don't think you need more DOF, f9.5 should be fine. I mostly use f8. Which AF mode are you using, Expanded or Auto? I recommend Expanded Area 25 points, with the center point selected. Auto AF Select sucks.
Also, try AF Hold Medium. IME, with AF Hold active, focus is less likely to drift to the background.unless you're shooting in a cloudless sky

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it. I did use AF.C and medium hold but not the expanded area and center point.
