Does BIF stand for Butts in focus, cause that is what most of mine are. jim
BNIF (Butts, not in Focus) is what I often get at the Dog Park.

but every so often an alternative to a seagulls...

Question: should I crop out the bottom bird? It seems a bit too oof. I have a virtual copy with the top left and bottom bird cropped, but something's 'missing' in that version.

Thanks for starting this thread, Torrentes--it's called out some really magnificent photos! So much so that it inspired me to I revisit my one and only serious BIF attempt and--since I've made some progress with my pp skills in the last month or so--reprocess it from scratch.

This was taken (DA*300mm + Tamron 1.4x TC) during the Pentax Forums-sponsored outing to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge back in June.

I think that if you crop the bottom and left bird the image ends up too "tight". Cropping to where you remove about half of them and cloning out the rest is an option, but it's up to you whether you would consider editing an image to such extent.

Nice terns though! I have oodles of tern shots since they seem to be the most common bird on the beach around here.... my favorites are Ibises though. I suspect I have around 3,000 birds in flight shots in Lightroom as we speak. It's addictive.

Although not especially exciting to look at compared with some birds, seagulls really are masters of the air and their ability to hang almost motionless in almost any weak and turbulent lift makes them good for photographing in flight. There arn't that many other birds that you could get good in flight photos with a standard lens. There must be enough seagull photos now for them to have thread of their own

Seagulls sure can hover well. I was at the beach one day and one had a little sign around his neck, "Will hover for food!" I held up a Cheeto cheese curl and he just adjusted his wings slightly and gently took it from my fingers. Several other gulls appeared and they too would hover for Cheetos.

Some fantastic photos here, I wished I'd looked through and picked up some tips before giving it a try. Here's the best of the bunch..........

Sooty Tern w/ DA50-200 @ 200m uncropped. Not so sharp next time I'll try turning off the SR.
