Thank you for your advice, audiobomber, but I have to disagree a little. Improved AF will give me more in-focus BIFs, and improved ISO performance will lessen the effects of my choice of aperture. I really don't think this situation called for wider than f6.3. A wider aperture than f6.3 is not a good strategy IMHO for a flock of birds when I want a decent chance to catch more than one individual in focus. This is a BIF thread, and I shouldn't post sitting birds, but if you would forgive me posting just a single one to illustrate my point, here are the horned larks sitting. They were moving about, and this is THE best one I got, with at least a few of them more of less inside the focus plane. Wide open, this would NOT have been worth keeping. (OK, I guess many people would argue that it still isn't, but since it's my best horned lark shot ever, it's keepable to me. But I'm happy the DOF isn't any narrower for sure)
