deliberately not as colorful but I do like the shadow of the cliff swallow as it comes in for a landing

[ I wish I could say that I planned it in advance but I didn't ]

I saw my first Ruby-throated Hummingbird on my Quebec trip! These east coast birds are very, very different from my usual west coast ones.

Manual focus w/the K1 and Sigma 500mm

I looked at "allaboutbirds" but I still can't tell if it's an osprey or a hawk. K-3 and Sigma 150-500 at 500mm. Not the sharpest results I've ever gotten.

I certainly am no expert

my guess based on the image I found on page 125 of The Sibley's Guide to Birds 2nd Ed

is that it isn't an osprey-

" dark wrists and covers " are missing

possibly a juvenile western red tail hawk - page 138

yes, you can clearly see the difference in the colors of feathers of the wing where it bends between the osprey and the other bird

not sure if my id will stand up, but it isn't an osprey (I hope that is correct )

I rechecked allaboutbirds and your id is correct. And of course with shots of each it became more obvious.

went out to the Topeka Zoological Park today to try out 3 lenses

while I was there I saw the two captive trumpeter swans have 5 cygnets about a week old

this one decided to move some Mallards out of the way [ note its bow wave, it was on the move ]

A series

( when using my camera, I have a blind spot to my right ( I'm right handed and right eye dominant )

so today then this Great Blue Heron Ardea herodias

http://www.birdinginformation.com/birds/herons-bitterns-egrets/great-blue-heron/

[ showing all of its 6 foot wingspan ]

came from my right, flying from the tree line to the opposite side of the pond, it was a surprise and I was a little late ( my first photo captured the bottom part of the legs )

this is the second time I saw this bird at one of the ponds at the Topeka Zoological Park

These photos were captured with my K 3 ( and the new to me ) Smc PENTAX-DA L 55-300mm F4-5.8 ED

This image of gulls was captured at Whiting Overlook Park in Midland County, Michigan, with my RMC Tokina 500mm 1:8 on my Pentax K-S2, supported by an inexpensive chest pod I bought years ago from a camera store's clearance table.

I have seen many images in this thread which are far better, but I am pleased to have captured this "grab" shot at 1/125 second.

Thanks to everyone who posts in this thread, and best wishes.

sometimes a "grab " shot [ or as I categorized them - " shoot and pray opportunity " ] is all you get

no chance to change settings or grab the right lens, scrambling to get auto focus or manual focus

hope for the best.

been there done that, but not as well as others most the time

some times you just have to get lucky
