Well, if it wasn't for his ability to fly, he would be falling.

Seems to be reaching maximum wing beat speed before letting go. A very Short Vertical take off

K 3 II + Smc PENTAX-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited

these cliff swallows nesting at the " facilities " in the Lamar Valley in Yellowstone are fast and maneuverable

you focus on the nest and then they swoop in from behind and your chance is gone

I've never had much luck with BIF; a few have been OK, but at a very low keeper rate! . . .

These shots were a bit lucky; see bird and shoot with whatever settings were already set - f8, 1/250, ISO100 and wind the 18-135 out to the maximum.

...oh yes, then crop, crop, crop!!
I know your pain

noticed GBH in the flooded water as I drove by in YNP

had to find a pull out

no chance to adjust lenses, just grab and go

walk back up the road and cross it

walk off the road toward the bird, trying to move quick but quiet, [ at altitude much above the 950 feet above sea level back in Topeka Kansas ]

watch out for the holes, sage and " other stuff "

what, it's flying off

quick photos

ok, it is landing on the far side

quick photo

and the worst scenario is when they fly in from behind and you have no notice at all

shoot and pray technique, if you don't try you have no chance at all

best of the lot

K 3 II + Smc PENTAX-DA* 300mm F4 ED [IF] SDM + HD Pentax-DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter

hand held

1 - crop and pp - midflight

2 - crop otherwise no pp [ previously posted with pp ] - touchdown

Awesome.
Thanks Racer X. I just started playing around with camera triggers. This was done with an IR trigger which seems good for birds and larger subjects. I just ordered a tripod mounted laser source for insect shots.
You do not get a lot of keepers since your are dealing with two lines of sight: the light source and the camera view. The subject, bird in this case, trips the IR line of sight trigger which snaps a shot. The subject needs to still be in the camera field of view and also in the small DOF bubble to get a keeper.
