These shots were a bit lucky; see bird and shoot with whatever settings were already set - f8, 1/250, ISO100 and wind the 18-135 out to the maximum.

had to find a pull out
no chance to adjust lenses, just grab and go
walk back up the road and cross it
walk off the road toward the bird, trying to move quick but quiet, [ at altitude much above the 950 feet above sea level back in Topeka Kansas ]
watch out for the holes, sage and " other stuff "
