I have two of Berlebach tripods, they are superb. I use them with my 4X5 and 8X10 format cameras which also feature metal fittings and Ebony wood on both front and rear standards.

It's certainly a striking tripod. Can I ask... why are they so revered? I mean they look nice but not so portable perhaps or durable long term perhaps (if used in harsh conditions). Help alleviate my ignorance

High quality German craftsmanship is a great attraction, also Berlebach have an extensive list of useful and ingenious accessories for their tripods. The Berlebach quick release coupling system is more compact and unidirectional compared to standard arca plates.

Wood - at least at similar thickness/build quality - is supposedly better at dampening vibrations than aluminum. Ymmv.

Just as Pentax is not a well known brand but we all know it's the best, nobody that knows Berlebach is the best as well...except maybe for lugging one to make panoramas at the top on mountains...!

My grandfather carried his berlebach tripod around with him on the Heysen trail well into his 80's, even when he "downsized" from 8X10 to 4X5 format.

Sounds like a fun sort of guy. My Dad walked us 2 blocks to his favourite restaurant for his 100th birthday dinner, 13 Jan 2005. He was still active until Easter weekend that year, but fell out of bed and got a wedge fracture of the spine and ended up in a home as a result. He still survived until 9 Oct 2007. He was a tough old bird, and I still miss him. I think you miss your grandfather.

Art Sinsabaugh used a rather stout tripod to support the 12x20" view camera he used for taking landscape and architectural pictures. Here's a picture (stolen from the web) of him carrying his "walk-around" kit from his station wagon:
