Wow, those are really nice! Are they significantly cropped or were you close enough to fill the frame at 135mm?

The Mitsubishi A6M-5 Zero was probably the most famous Japanese fighter of WWII.

This one at the Planes of Fame museum is the only flying original using the stock Japanese motor.

The plane was very light, due to lack of any armor.

The agile fighter was a better dogfighter at slower speeds than the US counterparts.

Firing up for a fly-by.

MattB - sorry for the REALLY late reply... I was close enough to fill the frame with the 50-135 in most of the shots. The museum is very photographer-friendly, allowing tripods and it's an excellent trip on a day when the crowds aren't too big.

Here's a few more...

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was a famous US plane from WWII.

It was nick-named the "Fork-Tailed Devil" by the Germans.

This one has had a few paint schemes over the years.

The fairing at the wing-fuselage joint reduced buffeting in the tail at high speed, and was retrofitted on earlier versions.

The business end features four .50-cal machine guns and a 20mm cannon.

Another retrofit was a small flap on the trailing edge of the wing used in high-speed dives to control tail flutter and the unplanned increase in dive angle. It was not a dive brake, but it served to alter the airflow under the wing and prevent the center of pressure of the airflow from moving backward.
