I visited the SoCal CAF museum when it reopened in July. This is an Antonov AN-2, touted as the world's largest single-engine biplane. A STOL-type aircraft, it's big, loud and slow. (how the docent describes it.) Lumix LX3:

Looks like an airworthy plane, do they offer rides?

They didn't allow you to have a look inside, or sit in the cockpit?

I got to peek inside the side door for a few moments, that's all. This is the 2nd "Big Panda" they've had at the Camarillo CAF. The first one, a bright yellow one, was flown regularly and is now at another CAF location (Inland Empire?). IIRC, the docent told me the plane is rarely flown - high maintenance & scarcity of parts were the reasons he gave.

Here's one of the biggest weather vanes in the world, supposedly. It's sitting out front of the Yukon transportation museum in Whitehorse. I was hoping to get a shot of the northern lights in the background, but no such luck. It still looked pretty neat lit up at night though. They've got pretty good bearings in the stand, it doesn't take much wind to make it move, and it's absolutely silent. It was a bit unnerving standing directly under it and realizing it was moving above us.

Do the props spin too?
Cool display, could be exciting in some of the extreme weather that area gets.

That’s pretty cool. I suppose it is a better fate than other DC3’s but still, many of these awesome airplanes are still in service.

Having the props spin would be a cool way to measure wind speed, but unfortunately they don't. This particular one was retired in 1970, and was stripped for parts over the years. It was decided to turn it into a monument in 1977, and there are lots of old photos and information on it in the museum. I took pictures of most of it to read later, but it's pretty tough to get decent pictures in a museum. There were two photos of it on its nose, once because it went through the snow when they probably should have had the skis on it, and another time it went off the end of an ice runway.

We used to supply Cattle stations with supplies by DC3. Here is a shot along the wing, that I took in 1965 The area is Diamantina River Channel Country, West Queensland, past Monikira.
Retinette 1a 1965 Kodachrome. No navigation aids back then, and nothing to put on the maps either. You navigated by experience.

Regarding the DC3 on a post, here are closeups taken in 1993

Here is a daylight picture of the tail wheel and main wheel.

Here's some pictures I took of the DC3 displays at the museum. Just cell phone pics, but the info should at least be legible. My family didn't want to wait for me to read all the info, so I took pictures for future reading.
