I see another plane flying away under the wing between the two port side engines. Can't quite make out what plane it is, but there looks to be twin tails. Not so sure but maybe it is a Mitchell.

mid-air meeting

San Francisco Fleet Week Air Show. Nov 9, 2011. Cannot remember what aircraft these are.

Not really the prettiest shot, but I was lucky on the timing. It is not the shot; it is how they fly these things! Real (or unreal) precision flying!

Shot on my then 3-month-old K-5 on 55-300mm lens. Set to 230mm @f/8 ISO80 handheld.

Indeed! Can you imagine the 'nads it takes to fly like that? A fraction of a second off on the timing and it is over quickly.

Yes, I know. When the Collings Foundation had the three planes at Paine Field a few years ago I had the same issues.

Here are some more from those two days.

{All taken with *istDL and 18~55 kit lens}

Nine~O~Nine B17

Witchcraft B24
Great shots of both the B-17 and the B-24. You did a good job of lighting the interior shots too.

I just made do with the available light. If I had a chance to do it again I would do some exposure bracketing and stack the shots, so the area in the windows wasn't burned out. Back then I didn't know about using post processing to do stuff like that.

Here are some more shots of the B25.

I have to take some of this back. I went back and looked at the exif on those pictures and the bomb bay shots, and the one looking inside the rear fuselage of the B-17 shows that I had the on board flash on.

I usually don't care to use the built in flash, it doesn't often work well, and the lens hood causes a shadow if I don't remove it. And usually natural light makes for a better image.

Here's a couple from this year's air show in Winston Salem, NC. All taken with K20D and SMC Pentax 400/5.6. Sometimes, a long lens can be problematic when trying to fit formations or large aircraft in the frame.

Clicking this last shot should take you to the Flickr set. Still more to process.

Some great pictures of some very nice airplanes John. Can you imagine all the work that goes into polishing the skin on the F86 and the B25?

Thanks. It was my first real outing with this lens. I was mainly setting hyperfocal distances but would adjust when needed as, even with prop planes, the manual focus was a bit tough to get it really nailed when they were moving.
