The contract air tankers assigned to KBIL this summer. Sorry for the fence but I couldn't get any closer without making folks nervous. I miss the good old days before 9/11. (sigh)  Two of the 'next generation' of air tankers. MD87 (DC9) holds 4000 gallons of retardant.  BAE146 holds 3300 gallons.  Old school Lockheed P2V holds 2000 gallons.  | |

Related to the inside pictures shown above, the exterior of the Comet 4. The engines are within the wing, on the Comet. The Comet was the first passenger jet in service, Structural failures of the Comet 1 gave the advantage to the Boeing 707. Taken c1977 with Yashica Lynx 5000.  ---------- Post added 06-08-15 at 10:39 ---------- This taken in Puerta Villarta 1993; a charter I flew from Vancouver. I doubt the aircraft is still flying as the engines were noisy and relatively inefficient. The B737 200 was a lot of fun to fly as the pilot was fully in control with no automation interfering between him and the machine. It was like a little fighter. I rode a lot in the back but I always wanted to fly a B732. I did get a few jump seat rides though.  I see on FlightAware there are 3 aloft as I type this. One in eastern Canada and two in Alaska. | |
