(The lunatic asylum doesn't look so great either...)
That was taken Monday, driving with the lights on in the afternoon, Tuesday the sun came out for the first time in weeks. But I headed to the country so no posts for this thread. Guess we need a "rural demise" project to compliment "urban decay".

Decided to post more asylum. Different one this time. This one not as interesting and not as good a standard.

This is from Harperbury Hospital formerly known as Middlesex Colony for Mental Defectives. It was built as a separate colony for the nearby Middlesex County Mental Hospital (before it was closed known as Shenley Hospital).

These photos aren't as good due to them being rushed as the floor felt like it was about to give way.

Colony for Mental Defectives.. that does sound very dreary. I really like the single chair facing the trippy painted wall in the second photo.

Cool shots & welcome Hali.

Very direct and to the point...not very compassionate. I can imagine how family felt as they approached the place on visitor's days. Are the signs still there? Those might make good subjects in their own right.

Nah it was changed to Harperbury Hospital. Parts of it are still open but all original signs are gone. As far as I'm aware it's the same on all of the old asylums. They often had names like West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum (which later became Stanley Royd Hospital) but they were all changed. Obviously that kind of language isn't exactly approved of these days.

Harperbury is quite interesting though as it was an external colony which was built originally for the schooling and housing of '...mental defectives who are socially inadaptable in the community, or who are neglected or without visible means of support.' and in fact I believe there have been a few breakthoughs in teaching methods for autism if I remember rightly... Hence why there's a classroom, in fact both pictures are of classrooms in the school building. The residential blocks were empty and boring.

Over here in the states we call them "politicians"

Seriously though very nice images, very depressing and scary place, you've made the walls talk a bit.
