PP Competition 2 - 2009/08/21-28

OK... so here is the next Post Processing competition. Submissions close at 7pm on the 28th.

This is a simple downsized version of the JPG straight out of the K20D.

The rules are as follows...
  • download the photo from the link provided
  • the current photo will be available for one week from today and then a new photo every week
  • the person who posts the photo will be the judge and the next winner will post the next photo and so on
  • feel free to crop or change the photo in any way you see fit! Anything goes!
  • post your completed images on this thread

Here is the link to the K20D raw file for your use... CLP_K20D_001781.pef - 17.5MB

For those who cannot work with or handle the RAW file for some reason, here is the link to the JPG straight from the K20D... CLP_K20D_001781.jpg - 6.5MB

My apologies for any crappy popups or stuff that appears when you go to get the RAW file. We need to find a better place to share these huge files from.

Mike

I think a one meg jpeg loaded into the gallery here would be sufficient for this competition. It would be limiting in some ways but on the other hand it would level the playing field.
Having them in the gallery would also be convenient for anyone else to go in and play retrospectively.
We could keep a list of links in the thread starter and add to it for each new competition.

I don't like that idea and wouldn't participate without a RAW file. Editing JPEGs isn't any fun to me. Besides, I don't see how it would "level the playing field" as there are several free RAW converters/editors out there for every OS around.

If it's a dial-up or CPU horsepower issue you're thinking of, a low res JPEG could be optional. Tech marches on...

Regards,
Mike

I do think that perhaps we should post our edits off site or perhaps in our gallery here to get some size to them.

Or offer both options. This is the second time I cannot open the large file because my raw image processing software is a bit dated (Raw Shooters Essentials 2006). Since RSE doesn't support the K20D PEF's, I guess I'll have to skip playing this time. The reduced size jpg posted won't allow for any kind of cropping.

I actually think the best option would be to upload a .zip or .rar file with both a .dng and a .jpeg. the .dng of course would make it much easier for most people to play. I actually do most of my PP with a .tiff though, which means I just convert the .pef or .dng anyhow. the colours looked amazing in PENTAX DCU4 by the way. very vibrant.

here is my entry. yep B&W as usual. I actually really like how the wheelhouse is in the distance. it gives a great look to the whole photo. excellent composition Mike.

I used the .PEF in lightroom with Nik Silver Efex Pro.

Original Poster
I've added a 4672x3104 pixel JPG to the original post for those with download or editor limitations or problems. Feel free to use either source file. Please state in your post whether you use the JPG or the PEF.

Good luck to everyone!

Since Mike was kind enough to post a large jpeg, here is my entry. It took a bit of work to balance out the light and I also had to desaturate a little, yellow in particular.

Here is my attempt using LightZone. Using the PEF I used some gaussian blur regions to emulate a tilt-shift effect and then used my dragan-style PP method.
