PP Challenge #7 - Action (7 Oct 09 - 14 Oct 09)

Welcome to PP Challenge #7. The image to do your PP stuff on is a skateboarding action shot. I'm looking for ingenuity beyond the PP basics on this one.

Thanks again to Tim for setting up the generic MediaFire account:
Mediafire Account Log-In Name: pentaxchallenge@yahoo.com
Password: postprocessing

RAW (PEF) file link (11MB): Skateboarding05.PEF

Full size JPEG (1.8 MB): Skateboarding05.jpg

The Challenge will close for entries in 1 week - i.e. midnight (GMT) of the turn of the 14th of October, or until there are at least 10 entries to judge on (hoping that this challenge will be reasonably well patronised)...

Enjoy PPing..

Great shot Ash! Tried to remember what I did this time...
Adjusted in Topaz Labs
Motion blur on the background
Layer mask to reveal skater
Minor adjustments in LR.

Thanks for the entry.
Would you mind perhaps attaching the photo onto the post using the forum's message attachments feature - I cannot download the image from your host service. Much appreciated.

Post Processing with PSP X

1) I started off by giving the skater a bit more air by rotating the image to the right and cloning in the missing sky and trees. I then used a blur brush to give a uniform out of focus look to the trees.

2) I then balanced the bright background with the darker skater by (a) duplicating the layer, (b) desaturating the duplicate, (c) changing the duplicate layer to a negative image, (d) set the blending mode to overlay (e) reduced the opacity to 42%

3) I then duplicated the original layer again and merged the first duplicate layer to the second duplicate layer

4) Then I applied a Clarify adjustment at +6

5) Unsharp Mask (USM) @ radius: 50. strength: 15 and clipping: 3

6) Duplicate Layer and apply second USM treatment @ radius: 0.30. strength: 300 and clipping: 3 - Desaturate, Soft Light Blend Mode
and 61% Opacity

7) Used a light (20% opacity) dodge brush on the face.

8) Cropped Square

9) Resized to 750 x 750 pixels

10) Unsharp Mask (USM) @ radius: 1 Strength: 100 and Clipping: 3

Multiple masked layers with motion and radial blurs applied to the background. Hue adjustment applied to the background as well. A separate motion blur was applied to the skateboate to suggest a rotational movement in a different axis from the panning blur of the background. Small amount of lens flare applied to one background layer to add folcal point by the skater's right hand.

Combining Ash's shot with one of my own.

I started with the small jpg image. I spent most of the time building a mask for the skater & skate board. Always good to practice making masks. This one wasn't too bad. It did have a couple tricky parts, though. Then it was a simple matter to superimpose the skater onto my airplane shot. Lucky for me, the lighting on the skater isn't too far off from the lighting on the airplane.
