Quick! How many X's can you find? This is a faking box, used to arrange the cord pulled by a shot from a Lyle gun to a ship that's run aground near shore during a storm. The line is then used to pull out the heavy rope for rigging a breeches buoy. All the winding pegs are pulled before use. The neat crossing pattern prevents snarling/tangling and minimizes resistance to the shot. Partial cross-post or re-post.

Thanks savoche ... the whole family is going up to Paris next week via TGV. Have a hotel for the week and a heavy schedule of museums, Eiffel Tower and general "site seeing" for the girls ... the two youngest have never been up on the Tower. Me, I will be going all the snaps ... so lots of new material to come! And I look forward to eating at China town (in the 13th) near to where our hotel is ...

Z for ZIG-ZAG. Argiope webs have provided "zig-zag" at "Z" numerous times, but this is the first suitable web I've encountered this year. Mostly Argiope webs are common here from late August through September. The second spider in the background at upper right did not have a large stabilimentum on its web.
