Venomous snakes are SCARY. When we visited Texas some years ago, I was constantly running in front of the kids hitting the ground with a stick... which probably looked funny. But, you know, diamondbacks!
My son and I were out in SW Nevada… actually looking for rattlesnakes to photograph We spent several minutes just observing it to gauge it's aggressiveness and behavior, and wound up spending close to an hour watching and photographing the 3 foot long juvenile. My son, Chris, was working for the parks district at the time, and we both have a lot of experience with all sorts of reptiles. I wouldn't recommend our behavoir for everyone, but we did keep a safe distance and had a planned exit strategy if it had decided to move in our direction. It was certainly one of my all-time favorite wildlife encounters.
