Thanks all thumbs it's the top of a lookout in Castelmezzano - a little hill town that we stayed the night at in the Basilicata, a set of mountain ranges a few hours outside of Rome. The steps up were closed - but there was a way to get up there - i imagine they do that during peak season. We were there in off season and had the little hill town completely to ourselves. The lookout has views of the valley on either side and would be a great place for birding. The entire town is built into the mountain and made of local stone. One of my favourite places on our trip.
