It looks like a darning egg, although I've never seen one in that color pattern. Most old wooden ones, with handles, that I've seen have been black or sometimes natural wood stained or oiled (esp. if made of rosewood). The no-handle glass darning eggs are typically all white. The pictured red-and-white one looks like a modern plastic version.

Yes, it is a more modern version of a sock darner than the wooden ones. Funny, I think it looks like it was made by a fishing bobber company!
