Neuschwanstein

N is for NEUSCHWANSTEIN, the fairy tale castle of Ludwig II, last monarch of Bavaria. The interior (no photos allowed) is filled with incredible murals depicting events from Wagnerian operas.

Offerings

O is for OFFERINGS. All manner of trinkets - toys, shells, flowers, strings of tiny snails, coins, pins, golf balls - left around a memorial to people killed by the 1946 tsunami that hit the north side of Hawaii and was the trigger for the Pacific tsunami warning system. The majority killed here were teenagers together with their teachers. They are listed with their age, down to three months (Nakano, Norman). No one disturbs the offerings. Some of the coins have clearly been there for many months if not years.
