US Mail

U is for U.S. MAIL, actually airmail. Pitcairn biwings were one of the earliest successful designs used for overnight airmail delivery in the US. Notice the double open cockpits.

I'm going to take "V" as I have a couple for that letter. Hope nobody minds. Unless we get stuck on "X," I'll hold off until about "I" "J" and "K" for which I also have several that might be of interest.

Viking Splash

V is for VIKING SPLASH, a tour operator in Dublin. Would you believe those hats? Always wondered if any of my Norwegian ancestors wore those.

Probably not as there haven't been any real viking findings like that. Big horns on helmets sounds pretty bad in fighting, on the ship and when trading.

.

I agree. Always suspected that those horned helmets were primarily the invention of Wagner's costume designer.

I suspect that neolcmn was working on his "U" posting just when I was putting up my "U" and "V" and didn't see my posts when he submitted his own. No matter. We just get another picture to enjoy. Sorry that the old biplane didn't appear for a bit. I think I hit submit before it finished loading.

Thanks, Noel. I got lucky with the light for a couple of minutes, and the pipes beside the tracks was a bonus.

Hey this is Africa (TIA) if you like, an growing concept here is South Africa, as we grapple with Africaness. TIA means, amongst other things- V comes before U, just as the fancy takes you. Then there is African time- (AT) which posits the idea that you can do a thing at your convenient time, disregarding all rules of ethos, time frames, yea, even the clock. There is an expression here- "In Europe we have watches, in Africa we have time!"

Ok, my apologies. And keeping things African.

Z for Zulu dancing maidens. ( Zulu's being the dominant ethnic tribe in South Africa)

A is for airplane

This F-86 is outside a museum in Frankenmuth, Michigan, which honors Michigan veterans. In addition to other displays, it has what is believed to be the largest collection of awarded Medals of Honor.
