Volcanic terrain. The volcano is at the just visible at the top of the image, the black cinder layer from it covers the ground. At the moment, this young material is a very hostile habitat where few plants can survive. Were it in a wetter climate, it would in time convert to a relatively high-quality, mineral-rich soil (andesol), although some nitrogen content would be needed, provided primarily by the decay of the pioneering plants.
