Icelandic history, the Book of Settlements, a very old (oldest?) copy that documents the earliest years of Viking life on Iceland (quite a bit of inter family/clan violence). The handwriting is really beautiful.
Ooh, Landnámabók, that's nice! I can make out some of it, but Old Norse is hard enough to decipher if it weren't written by hand, beautifully or not

I knew/hoped the image would catch your attention and interest. As I recall, this is a 16~17th century copy from much older manuscripts, with marginal notes.

Seems the earliest surviving copy is from late 13th century, but I don't know if that's displayed. Found this interesting-looking resource on Icelandic/Old Norse literature in general and Landnámabók in particular: LandnámabĂłk- THE BOOK OF THE SETTLEMENT OF ICELAND.

It may be that the 13th century copy was also on display in this museum. I'll try to look through the Iceland images to find out. BTW: I try to make a habit of taking a quick photo of museum labels at the same time I photograph a display so there's a record of the details.

I was correct on the date of the pictured manuscript. The copyist died in 1672. Scholars believe he was working from a velum copy that dated from about 1200, but that manuscript was destroyed shortly after the pictured copy was completed. There was no information on the label about other very early copies. I will send you a PM with images of three other ms that might be on interest.

Outhouse, a structure known by several other names. Did I miss "L" and "M?"

Thanks a lot! We want to visit Iceland, but never seem to get it done. I was there on a short two-day trip some years ago, but didn't have time for much looking around.
