Whilst I was in the Army each time I earned my stripes, rather than trying to sew them on, I conveniently used a Buttoneer. No one ever noticed. I wonder if those things are still made...?

I guess I should read all the comments before posting my own, avoiding redundancy. Vertebrate Paleontology, eh? I got as far as inverts before changing direction into geophysics.

1) Rather than out-of-box-thinking, I call IT suggesting a more logical sequence of letters.

2) My sister-in-law gave my a Buttoneer as a present decades back. Used it a lot, but it would only work on special one-hole buttons that did not match the one that came off (reattaching buttons was my most common sewing problem) and the little plastic things did dry out, become brittle and break sooner than good nylon thread.

3) Yes a VP person, my wife as well (she is still active, cannot let go of it; I quit research in '95 because of a variety of factors beyond my control and tolerance). Do you remember when SVP and GSA always had joint meetings? They became quite a zoo, overwhelming, so SVP decided to meet separately, but now attendance is almost as large at the early joint meetings that I attended.

We had a Renault 16. Very comfortable, many clever, innovative features, but fragile. More repairs than any two, maybe three other cars I've owned. Managed to get it to 95,000 miles, but a significant part of the original body had been converted to Bondo.

I'm on my second Subaru Forester, the first having served for 214,000 miles. The major weakness of all Subarus is the head gasket(s) on that "boxter" engine. I might have kept the original vehicle except the (second) head gasket went bad, and the rear brakes had developed rust to the point they needed replacing, adding up to repair costs that were far above the value of the car. The trade-in I got for the new Forester was 1/4 the estimated repair bill.
