That's quite an amazing, intriguing fairy-tale fortification.

Water pipe. Does this fellow have pneumonia and fluid in his lungs?

Moorish Castle in Sintra Portugal, taken back from the moors in the 1100s , Portuguese history is very spotty since so many records were lost in the great Lisbon earthquake in 1755

That quake was a very famous event. It had everything: massive destruction by the quake itself, a major tsunami (sea was shoved out offshore, then came roaring back), and a devastating fire. The rest of Europe thought it was celestial punishment for the high lifestyle the Lisbonites were enjoying as a consequence of the wealth brought back by their explorers. That same year there was a major quake in New England, epicenter probably near to, slightly offshore of Cape Ann north of Boston. People have tried find a cause-and-effect relationship between the two events, but it is exceedingly unlikely considering the distance between.

there was also a tsunami like event recorded by Portuguese explorers in Brazil Right about the time of the Lisbon quake . they also had one a couple of hundred years earlier in the 1531 and in 1321. based on those numbers they are overdue for a big one
