Narwhal ivory used for the top structure and the base, figures in some other ivory(?). German about 1670. The purpose or function of this object is uncertain. The container at top opens, so perhaps it held something like cosmetics. It may have been created simply as a curiosity = something to display as a conversation piece. Notice in the upper carving a unicorn with an exceptionally long horn among fishes. This may reflect the belief that a narwhal tusk was a unicorn's horn.

Wetmore parlor, all the paneling and some furniture & paintings from a room finished in 1748 in Connecticut, maintained as-was by the family for generations before being donated to this art museum. Simple almost to the point of being severe. but also with a certain elegance.
