V is for VIOLENCE. This is one of a series of paintings, some now lost, done in imitation of engravings, that illustrate the story of robbers entering a house then getting caught. Here the owner of the house, prominent at left center grabbing one criminal by the hair and pointing a pistol at him, has brought in neighbors and caught the robbers. The homeowner's wife and children who were asleep on the sofa have been awakened in fright by the ruckus. This painting is quite small, about 14 inches long, but is marvelously detailed.
