The fellow who showed the plant to me (in a botanic garden on Trinidad) squeezed a half pod with his thumb which remained bright red an hour later. Quite an intense red pigment. I read an on-line semi-scientific commentary on the plant that observed that local people in widely scattered locations where the tree grows use it for similar medicinal purposes. The author suggested that such properties might be worth investigating.
