Oak gall. SCAN The first time I saw one of these I had no idea what specifically it was, although I suspected some kind of insect/wasp gall. They are much prettier than the average plant gall.

Here's an FYI I just searched out and copied:

These pink-spotted, white cottony wool sower galls are about the size of a ping-pong ball and are produced by a tiny species of Cynipid wasp, Callirhytis seminator, and are most commonly found on white oaks.
