The Zouaves were originally a renowned group of French soldiers who had special uniforms and had a reputation for military excellence. At the outbreak of the American Civil war, men organized themselves into volunteer regiments and took on the title and style of the Zouaves as they understood them, together with distinctive fancy uniforms. Zouave regiments were organized both North and South, but arguably the most famous were from New York City.

Why thank you Sir, most interesting! These French- They're everywhere. Hugenots here in SA, and Zouaves in America.

Presumably the French Soldiers were in France where they gained their renown?

Thanks WPresto, once again I benefit from your vast knowledge.
