S for SNARED and SUSPENDED. The spider that made this web apparently departed some time before the hapless fly got caught by it.

G is for GILL. This is a one gill (= one quarter of a pint) bottle, originally for heavy or whipping cream, and as you can see from the thick glass, intended to be reused many times, but there is more. In 1908, Thomas Hunt Morgan captured a fruit fly with a banana on a windowsill at Columbia University, intending to use the insect to study genetics. Morgan’s research, together with that of his students and colleagues, established our modern understanding of chromosomal/gene inheritance, and produced five Nobel prizes, including one for Morgan. In the earliest days, the flies (Drosophila) were raised in one gill bottles such as this one, closed with a cotton-wad stopper. Later, as research on fruit flies expanded exponentially, mass produced purpose-built containers that were lighter and more convenient replaced these heavy glass bottles. I collected this particular bottle with several others from a waste bin at Columbia. It may have been used in Morgan’s lab before he moved to California, although it is impossible to be sure.
