Q for QUEER CONTRAPTION, and QUAINT LOCOMOTIVE. Detail of the drive mechanism of the cog railroad engine that climbs Mt. Washington, and a general view of this venerable contraption.
FYI: After some background research that should have been done before posting. 1) This was the first cog RR, in operation since 1869; 2) it is the second steepest cog RR currently in operation (average grade 25%; steepest grade just over 37%); 2) the locomotive pictured was put into operation in 1875, it burns coal and is still in operation; 4) after 2000, several biodiesel locomotives were put into use - faster and much more efficient; but tourists naturally prefer this little stinker; 5) there have been two runaway accidents (drive axle broke on original vertical boiler engine; switch set wrong caused derailment of locomotive) that claimed a total of six lives, but the system has successfully transported over 5 million visitors to the summit; 6) 2012 set the record for passengers.

U for UPSIDE DOWN. Someone near me was worried about this turtle. I told them that if they couldn't right themselves, they would have long since been extinct.
