QUARANTINE HOSPITAL on an island in Portsmouth Harbor, originally connected to the mainland by a causeway-style bridge (pilings clearly visible, but several of the spans are gone. 19th century building obviously undergoing renovation. I have not been able to discover what disease(s) caused people to be treated, or interred here.

FYI: See post below by YeOldePentaxian (after letter "V") and go to the website he's posted for correct information. The tour guide who told us this had been a quarantine hospital was apparently misinformed. It was first and formost a lifesaving station of the classic type (small boat within the building and housing for a crew of men to row it out in an emergency).

I wish I could save this "Q" image by reference to the "QUALITY" men who worked there, but instead I'll squander another valuable "Q" image, less interesting but incontrovertible: QUENTAL, a man who was and is well respected by Azorans.

Under construction, a whaleboat partially finished to show how it's made. The interior planking was much thicker than I would have guessed.

Yes, although we were told by a tour guide en route to Appledore Island (Isles of Shoals) that it had been used as a quarantine hospital. My searches on line failed to produce any information about its use for that purpose. Could be the tour guide was misinformed, and apologies if I've posted an unqualified "Q" image.

Under the History tab on that website Yeoldepentaxian directed us to, it is mentioned that "In 1827, the Maine State Legislature ceded Wood Island to the Federal Government. The U.S. Navy is reported to have constructed a barracks there around that time, however, an 1865 photo shows only a barren island. By 1889, a military hospital had been erected along with several outbuildings. Spanish-American War prisoners were quarantined there to prevent the spread of Yellow Fever.".
