No need to apologize at all - as a sailor and someone with an interest in history I found the whole story very interesting, wandered off into reading about various quarantine hospitals along the east coast yesterday.

For the letter A - a scan of a print from 1991 - Mario Andretti walking with Little Al Unser

Blubber Bucket. Blubber from a whale carcass being cut up outside this factory was hauled in buckets such as this, then lifted up with a winch and loaded into the top of large autoclaves for processing to extract oil.

Yes, although we were told by a tour guide en route to Appledore Island (Isles of Shoals) that it had been used as a quarantine hospital. My searches on line failed to produce any information about its use for that purpose. Could be the tour guide was misinformed, and apologies if I've posted an unqualified "Q" image.
You're safe to use that as Q. If it wasn't a Quarantine hospital then it was Quarters (housing) for the boat crews. In 1915 the U.S. Life Saving Service was merged with the U.S. Lighthouse Service to become the U.S. Coast Guard.

Jaw art. This scrimshaw-like artwork is on the inside of the back (joint) end of a whale jaw, done by a lady who is apparently still at it. Have several of these to post. They are really quite handsome and indicate substantial artistic skill, certainly better than anything I could muster (now that is faint praise).

I have been away for a few weeks, more or less. Both of my parents passed away within two weeks of each other, we were attending to my father's injuries when my mother slipped away on us. But we had time to say good-bye to both and they were in their 80's. Returning to photography is part of healing.
