Ice, from compressed snow. The thin black layers are long pauses between snow storms which allow debris to accumulate on the surface.

I would not try to recover a drove if the engines gave out during a flight over that place. If you GOOGLE "Goose Necks of the San Juan River" you'll find more spectacular images than mine. I used aerial stereo photos of that place for my students in a geology lab. Alas, few of them appreciated what they were seeing.

Hi Walt
The newer generation of drones are rather frugal on power cosumption, and here in Aus becoming more affordable.
If you could take the students out of the lab and show them again at a less than school like location they might take it in.
