Iron mine in northern Norway that was expanded into an air raid shelter for almost an entire town, protecting themselves against Russian bombers that were driving out the Germans = friendly fire.

NORD NORGE, the ferry we took up the coast of Norway. A more normal looking image of the boat than a sweep panorama I posted earlier.

Pileated woodpecker. This adult male had been struck by another vehicle. I picked it up out of the road and took it to a veterinary practice that was certified to deal with migratory birds. They were going to pass it on to the big veterinary school at Tufts. That was this past Monday. I don't know the fate of the bird, but I am not optimistic. I don't think woodpeckers do well in captivity. I am very skeptical that they would be able to get this bird to eat.

Thanks for rescuing it, Walt. We all have fingers crossed for its recovery. I'm sure they have methods for feeding their patients, even the reluctant ones!

Underground shelter in an expanded, converted iron mine. A major problem early on was poor ventilation. People went out on the surface in shifts to get fresh air.
