Jars and jugs unearthed in Pompeii

The large jars (called "amphorae")along the ground level have always bewildered me because they cannot stand on their own and must either be leaned up against something, or each other, or ba set into a stand of some kind. The design is extremely old as examples on the order of 5~6,000 BCE are known from China and other areas from from Greece. The usual explanation is that they stack well and support each other during shipment on a cart or especially a boat.

Latch - think. I think it is on the inside,. A key is inserted through the hole at the bottom to turn back the bar just above that hole, there's a little prong on the bar for the key to push. The spring at left pushed the bar back into place through a metal loop that fit into the chiseled out area at the right when the door was closed.

Apologies if I'm explaining something to more mechanically savvy Pentaxians than I for whom the operation of this latch is self-evident
