As I drive around for my job, I see very few well-kept wooden barns, but this one is probably the worst kept barn I've ever come across. The rest of the rest of the original farmyard has been cleared away to make room for a gravel pit, but the barn and a concrete shed beside it still stand, sort of.

I have seen worse-kept barns than that, but their ridgepoles had snapped, their roofs had caved in, and they were more recognizable as ruins than as barns. That old barn in your picture still has a will to survive!

You do have a point there. Sometimes the spirit is willing, but the body isn't.

Often old barns will get rather sway-backed before the ridgepole snaps, too. The one in your picture is pretty straight-backed.

I hope no one minds a short detour into old barn nostalgia, but I would love to be driving around Saskatchewan and come across one of these barns from my family photo archives. Images are from almost 100 years ago, early 1920's, most likely shot on a No. 1A Autographic Kodak Junior, scans from negatives.

First two are from grandfather's homestead in the Assiniboia district of southern Saskatchewan, last one of the ladies in front of the barn with the stone foundation is unknown friend or relative.

I don't think my Mom knew about that place when she lived near Englewood, or we would have been taking here there when we visited.
