A couple of grain elevators and a barn in south Saskatchewan

Some detail on the metalwork on the roof vents of that last one:

jacamar, love those shots, seems a few folks took a different kind of shots on the roof vents.
KCOPET, nice shot of your find, really like that.
Here are a few shots of a neighbors barn with the old milk house. He started repairs on the one side. The farm belonged to his grandparents, dates from 1870"s but the barn was rebuilt in 1914.

From where I'm sitting in Saskatchewan, I would suggest the bullet holes are all the result of someone living there having an intense dislike of pigeons, magpies or crows, or mostly likely all three.

Or maybe owls (in the same barn, cross-posted from the 300m+ thread)

I know I was probably there at the nicest time of the year, but you're lucky to live in such a great province. And send us some more barns and grain elevators, while you're at it!

I don't know of anyone who hates owls. Well, rabbits and gophers hate them, but we need fewer of them and more owls. That's a great shot with the owl in window. The ones I see are on top of posts when I drive by. If I even slow down, they take flight and wait from a very safe distance for my vehicle to move on, no matter how long it takes. Other than starvation, I suspect vehicle collisions are the only danger owls face.

I don't know how anyone can hate rare Whooping Cranes, which were the target bird for our trip (also in the 300m+ thread), but I understand a number are lost to hunters. There are some people who will shoot at anything that moves, I guess. One common theme in Saskatchewan was that while the numbers of birds were spectacular, it was hard to get close to them. That owl flew as soon as we took one more step towards it, from about 150-200ft away.

The whooping cranes tend to be found with other large migrating birds and the most enthusiastic hunters aren't necessarily the wisest.

In my experience, owls are extremely wary, intelligent and fast.

I'm not a birder but I've found that migrating birds close to busy highways tend to be less easily spooked. It may help that I'm usually alone. Did you make it to Chaplin? The Trans-Canada is about 100 meters from the shore.

Now I know why you were in Meacham, checking out our oversized pothole sloughs.

True too often. I wonder if protecting the sandhill crane from hunting (even though it isn't a threatened species) would be a good idea. Let the hunters go after the Canada geese and snow geese and leave the other migratory species alone (although pelican numbers seem pretty healthy to me, but I could be wrong).

I will stop going off topic and post a couple pictures from the ghost town of Bents in a few days.

As a matter of fact we were on a family visit to Moose Jaw in August (our first Saskatchewan visit) and we were able to do a quick visit and tour just before we flew home. A really interesting place, especially on a day when it was completely still and the lake was dead calm.

Now back to the barns!

Red barn in blue light

Just stumbled across this beautiful thread, and a recent picture of a red Norwegian barn, taken long after sunset, immediately came to mind:

No owl, but similarly ornate roof vent on a very derelict barn west of Saskatoon:

No barns in the ghost town of Bents, but the grain elevator still stands.

What remains on what would have been the main street.

Those are great. The modern shiny metal grain silos just aren't the same, but I'm sure they are a lot more effective at keeping the critters out. I wonder if there was a local factory making those vents?
