RGlasel, that old barn just needs a bit of TLC. Love the old grain elevator & ghost town shots.
Norm, very nice shot there.
Found 2 barns in my neck of the woods that have roof vents much like the ones previously posted.
Best Regards, Bob

I always think of those vents as cupolas, perhaps a fancy architectural term for roof vents, but they are rather grand.

goatsNdonkey, Have to tell you a funny one. I also always considered the fancy vents to be cupolas. For 2 days I could not remember that word so I just said roof vent. The effects of age are wonderful ! Best Regards, Bob

Sometimes you can have too many cupolas.

There is a large modern metal barn just north of a town near here which has I believe FOUR cupolas on its roof, obviously to make it look old-fashioned. What is especially odd about it is that each cupola has weather vane on top of it (possibly all fake, or I just haven't seen them move when passing). In the old days a farmer wouldn't have more than one weather vane. I have seen some fancy old barns with two or three cupolas, each topped with tall lightning rods, and when those have the large colorful glass insulators at the bottom of them, they make the cupolas that much more impressive!

well kept barn with a new roof

Here are a couple of photos of a near by barn that is very well taken care of. No cupolas, only couple of lightning rods.
Best Regards, Bob

You are correct, with my backwoods upbringing I had always called them roof vents. I had no idea old roof vents were so valuable, in the case of the barn I found, the cupola is worth more than the rest of the barn.

old dairy barn

Some years ago this was a very active dairy farm. A really nice spread, now it appears they only keep a few head of black Angus.
Best Regards, Bob

almost every Morton building I've seen has at least one cupola
I was teasing the carpenter putting up our astro about no cupolas...he growled...they're only good for giving bats a home...anyway no cupola for us

a friends old barn

link81, went on flickr to get a better look at that photo, very nice shot Chris. Those buildings appear to be very old & very well kept.
Here are two photos of a good friends barn. According to the county records it was built in 1857. Roof was replaced about 10 years ago & the structure is really sound.
Best Regards, Bob

thank you
they were in pretty good shape, no idea of the history though, i happened to be driving by them at sunset, and literally pulled over and used the tailgate of my jeep as a tripod.
