Seems like a reasonable panoramic subject to me. K-5 and 55-300 WR, pano by crop.

I do when the subject is farther away but with anything this close it's going to be tough!

I think I've done a pano or two of a specific mountain / mountain range using either 135 or 200 (or in between) = yes, for such purpose it is OK.

I got curious and checked. I do between 135mm and 200 and even up to 300mm regularly. You just need lots of space and big landscape features which I'm fortunate to have here.
