This is in the Holly Shelter Game Lands, Pender County, North Carolina. The ecosystem in the photo is called a longleaf pine savanna, there is a lot of this in Holly Shelter, broken by areas with underbrush and by swamps. The gate to get in is about a ten minute drive for me.

Cool! I knew it looked familiar. I have never been there, but have a friend who did a educational workshop there and who shared pictures and knowledge. Very cool environment.

It’s kind of Mesmerizing when I go there, I’ll just sit there and look at it. I’d like to walk further in but don’t have the boots for that, several poisonous snakes in the area. It’s pretty much the sole habitat for the red cockaded woodpecker, although I haven’t found any yet. It seems that where this system meets the swamp is where the carnivorous plants are found.
