Farms and agricultural settings seem to abound with rusty things that evoke nostalgia.

Hey mate, get to work with the sandpaper and steel wool. Actually the rust looks pretty superficial to me. Some of the rusty metal objects posted on this thread have been partially converted to sediment.

Let me ask you this - it being an engine, would you dare start it up, as is? Obviously we do not know the status of the internal parts...

Try to start it as-is? Absolutely not, nor would I attempt to refurbish it, but I suspect there are some who might try, starting with a cleaned-up oil pan just add a new engine block, new pistons, new rings, new valves, new crankcase, new bearings, new wiring, new..........

So true...saw this old DeSoto for sale....even in its rusted out, decrepit condition, it was still commanding attention:
That'll buff out.

Then they will clear coat it, right over the rusty spots.

And sell it for big bucks, calling it patina.

One of the guys I was with who knows about car restoration stated that "it had good bones" and could be readily restored--just needed a box of money to do it

To restore an old automobile, as I lectured my son, you need five things:
1) knowledge
2) tools
3) a lot of free time
4) a place to work year-round
5) a lot of extra money

If you're missing any one of these, you will never get the job done.
