I beginning to believe that every piece of iron in South Africa:
1) is rusty;
2) has been photographed by noelcmn

NYC has a lot of rust. It seems to be a never ending battle to keep the many bridges in good enough condition to handle the daily barrage of traffic that crosses them.

Good eye. This shot indeed is of an ending frame from a Bridge here (Queensboro / Ed Koch Bridge) - the elements, along with the traffic here are brutal on the infrastructure. Not to mention the age of the city. For example, this bridge was finalized in 1909.

I've been across the Verrazano, Outerbridge, GW, Throg's Neck, and a few others I can't remember, in a semi truck. They are all quite old, some older than I.

I also crossed the old Tappan Zee, as they were beginning the construction of the replacement, about 6 years ago.

They are all in bad shape.

There is a new one up there, the "Cuomo" Bridge... Yeah...

Daily, I go across the Queensboro/Ed Koch (59th street Bridge) in the AM, then through the Triboro (RFK) Bridge in the PM.

I should note that I also go across the Willis Ave. Bridge in the AM (I have to go to the Bronx). Nice short Bridge.

I bet your tolls are quite a bit cheaper than I paid in a big truck. The Verrazano was something like $80 for me.
