Actually the styling of the HMV freeway is not too dissimilar to that of one of the best post WWII micros cars that was made by the Messerschmitt company. The
Messerschmitt KR200 (and previously the KR175) was made by Messerschmitt after the Germans defeat and we took away their ability to make machines of war. So a lot of companies decided to give car manufacturing a try. The Messerschmitts ones are interesting as they were basically a car designed by aircraft engineers so the controls make sense if you view them like that. They were powered by a little 200cc class 2 stroke engine that put out about 10hp (7.5KW). While not a famous or widely produced as the
BMW Isetta 300 the KR200 is a very highly sought after microcar with nice copies commanding prices in the $30,000-$40,000 range. While small all of these cars are downright huge compared to a
Peel P50.

All of these vehicles make modern city cars like the Smarts, Ford Ka, Fiat 500, BMW mini, VW Polo, etc. seem like massive things. The car I learned to drive on was my mom's '92 Geo Metro convertible (they were a re-badged Suzuki Swift) which was smaller than your hatch back and those would have also been huge by comparison. The one I learned on had the 1L 3 cylinder not the 1.3L 4 cylinder engine. All of the micro cars were dwarfed by the more famous 1960s era mini cars like the original Mini, MG midget, original Fiat 500, Citron 2CV(I know these are older but they had a very long production run), Subaru 360 (the happiest car ever), etc.
