I didn't think you were an early starter.
Isn't the light on the bow wave lovely?

Three spare tires.

Seems a bit pessimistic.

I got forced off the road today by a drooling idiot in one of those stupid great campervan things that SHOULD NOT EVEN HAVE BEEN ON DARTMOOR BECAUSE CAMPING IS BANNED RIGHT NOW!!!!!!! I hit a rock and wrecked a wheel and tyre, and didn't even manage to get the cretinoid's registration for an insurance claim, so. . . . grrrrr.

Had to put on the crappy spacesaver spare and limp back to Tavistock, where luckily ATS is still open. But look what was there while I was getting my useless old Ford Fiesta fixed. . . only a GT40!

Sorry it's a rubbish photo, but hey, it's not every day you get to see one of these things in the flesh. Almost makes the new wheel, tyre and balljoint worth it. Almost.

Nah. SWMBO is always in the driver's seat.

Hey a bad photo is better than no photo, especially of a rare delight.

When we need to travel somewhere a significant distance, weddings, funerals, holidays, I prefer to drive there over flying commercial. Some years back Mrs. Racer's son got married (the third I think) in Las Vegas.

We drove over Snoqualmie Pass on I90 and hooked up with I82 at Ellensburg, down through Pendleton and Ontario Oregon, and just after crossing into Idaho cut off on US95 heading South. US95 swings back into Eastern Oregon, and down into Nevada, meeting up with I80 at Winnemucca. From Winnemmucca we continued South on US95, across the middle of Nevada. Lots of long, straight stretches of wide two lane highway.

Almost no other traffic. Another car maybe every fifteen or twenty miles.

I wanted to see how fast my Subaru Legacy wagon would go wide open.

Coming out of a canyon with some twisty bits I eased down on the accelerator and held it to the floor, accelerating the car so gradually that at first she didn't notice.

At about 120 miles an hour she leaned over and looked at the speedometer.

"How fast are you going?", she inquired.

"You should know, you just looked.", came the reply.

A moment later at about 130 or so, she said, "You can stop and let me out right here."

I lifted a bit, mostly ceasing the increase in speed.

"If I stop and let you out do you expect me to come back for you today, or would you prefer to wait until I return from your son's wedding?", I asked.

I knew better than to wait for an answer.

I eased off the gas and when the speed was around 80 or so I picked it up and carried it there for the rest of the straightaway.

It was a quiet ride for the next half hour or so.

So yeah, she drives from the passenger seat too. Pretty talented that woman.

I grew up in Northeast Massachusetts and my grandparents were both from New Brunswick, Canada. Back in the 40's when they would go back to visit their relatives, my grandfather always made the trip with 2-3 spares (strapped to the roof). Back then the roads up through Northern Maine were not much more than glorified logging roads and tough on vehicles.
