Looks like it has a boot on a wheel. Parking violations?

And I see an airplane behind it. Air cargo?

Probably to keep someone from hitching to the trailer and stealing it.

Passenger - it's part of the air and space museum.

I would assume so. I just don't know what it's doing in the mid-continent.

Any really big lakes out that way?

The US Navy has a submarine base on a lake in Idaho.

That's Lake Pend Oreille. They do acoustic research there, for both submarines and surface ships, as well as some more basic research. Since it's over a 1000 feet deep and amazingly quiet, it's a good place to do this kind of stuff. Away from prying eyes and ears...

A number of lakes are in the region, but none deep or clear enough to warrant use of such a sub.

Mark, it appears you may be involved in subsea oceanic research. If so, perhaps you've heard of the U.S. Navy's research program from the 60's, called SEALAB. I had a great uncle, Walt Mazzone, who helped pioneer the program, which was initially based in New London, CT. Later he and the program were transferred to San Diego, CA.

The astronaut-turned-aquanaut, Scott Carpenter, Joined SEALAB and worked with Mazzone (the pic shows Mazzone on the left and Carpenter 2nd from the right). The program ended after one of the deep sea divers was killed.

just wondering if you had heard of the program...

Thank you. It is a bit of a crop of course.
There are two of these flying out of an aerodrome near me and they usually take a passenger up. To my surprise neither had passengers despite the perfect conditions for flying

Yes, I'm familiar with SEALAB. I always thought it would be interesting to participate in it... until the diver was killed! When I was an undergraduate engineering student at Stony Brook University, one of the requirements for graduation was completion of a senior design project. I worked on designing, building and racing a hydrofoil sailboat. One of the other projects was basically a mini-SEALAB made of steel and concrete. It was built and submerged in Long Island Sound and used for a few years by the Stony Brook School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences as a base for oceanographic research.

As for the use of Lake Pend Oreille, look up LSV-2 on the web. LSV-2 was/is a 1/4 scale (about 111 feet long, named Cutthroat) copy of a Virginia class submarine (unmanned) used in the Lake for hydrodynamic and acoustic research.
