It might be that the USS Gerald R. Ford doesn't qualify as a boat, but hopefully ships, too, are accepted in here

This is from when it arrived in Oslo. I have some more images, from a closer distance, of it leaving a few days later. Will post them when I get them processed.

USS Gerald R. Ford is a bit short of space in the innermost part of the Oslo fjord...

The escort is the 132m/433ft frigate KNM Roald Amundsen.

A peek into the hangar deck.

The island.

That must have been quite a spectacle! Nice shots.

Indeed it was! I don't expect to get to see one of these giant floating airstrips again. I believe it's more than 60 years since a major US carrier last visited. The British HMS Queen Elizabeth dropped by last year, but I never got around to see her, unfortunately.

I did get to see USS Iwo Jima when she visited a few years ago. Of course, you nutters call her as an amphibious assault ship, not an aircraft carrier, no matter how many aircraft she carries

Unlike an aircraft carrier, an assault ship's function is to land troops ashore. Like the present day USS Iwo Jima it will generally has a wet/dry docking and storage facility for landing craft occupying a large part of the interior, of which the most obvious feature is a very large door in the stern. An assault ship will also carry helicopters predominantly or entirely, rather than fixed wing aircraft, and have the ability to accommodate (at least temporarily) large numbers of marines and/or other land force soldiers.

This is the British assault ship HMS Fearless (on which I served as an engineer at one time, but not my photo), showing the stern door lowered. It is down at the stern because ballast tanks are flooded while the dock is accessible. Unlike the Iwo Jima, The Fearless did not have a through flight deck because it handled only helicopters. It was decommissioned in 2002, and would look tiny compared with the USS Gerald R Ford, and small even compared with the USS Iwo Jima.

You are right, of course, and the Iwo Jima carries (or can carry) landing craft and nearly 2,000 marines in addition to helicopters and Ospreys. But it also is a 843 ft ship with, as you say, a through flight deck, and is able to carry some 20 F35 or Harrier fighters. I'd maybe go for something like "multi-role light carrier" - if 40,000+ tonnes is considered light

Remember, I come from a nation with a navy that won't impress anyone, unless, maybe, if you're from Lesotho.

This is a SHIP, not a "boat" - - correct?
