Continuing with the NAS Whidbey theme, and more P8 shots.

I have no idea what this was, but you clearly should not place your hand in there, lest it snap shut and chop off your fingers.

P8 main landing gear well. Pretty busy place, with all the hydraulic lines, wiring, accumulators (those green things) and all.

Beware.

It will suck you in.

I think if it ingested someone, the engine might get indigestion.

The venerable P3 Orion. These airplanes have been serving the missions of navies worldwide nearly as long as I have been alive. The first flight was in 1959, 3 years after I was born.

And they still are in service today, although the P8 is gradually replacing them.

No ingestion hazard here, they simply chop you up.

But no, it won't sting you. That thing sticking out the back is for magnetic detection of submarines.

And they are painted with special paint, in Jacksonville, Florida.

Something shot out of last night's sunset clouds:

Sigma f4.5-6.7 100-300mm DL at 100mm

(I'm still exploring how to get the best sharpness with this cheapo
AF lens I picked up as a toy for my Pentax PZ-10 film SLR).

More iPod madness at NAS Whidbey.

The fire crews.

Osh Kosh B'gosh!

I really dislike the iPod camera. Too easy to get a finger in the way.

My dad was stationed there in the mid 1960’s.

My brother served in the US Navy. He was born in the States when our dad, who was in the Canadian Army, served for three years in the States during the Korean War.

The HMCS Calgary, leaving Vancouver after Canada Day celebrations. Our Navy isn't huge, but at the beginning of WW II, Canada's Navy had six ships, and by the end of the war had the third largest fleet in the world.

Insitu had a booth at the NAS Whidbey open house, with one of their Scan Eagle UAVs on display.

These things are powered by a modified RC airplane engine.

Two of my uncles finished their seafaring careers as pilots. Guess where some advanced training is conducted.

Battle of Britain memorial flight was doing a little tour of the country today, Lancaster and one half of her fighter escort (there was also a Hurricane on the other side) seen here doing a flypast of Woodford aerodrome, a place very important in the Lancaster's history.

My first flight was as a passenger in one of those in June 1956. I was sick as the proverbial dog. Vancouver to Prince George, BC with thunderstorms making altitude changes rapidly. The return flight in August was just fine.

Back then the airlines could choose to have the main cabin door on the right or left side. With jetways it seems that everyone exits left.
