I know what you mean about the nostalgia. I loved my '56 Monarch (Mercury to you south of the border), 2-Dr hardtop, baby blue and white, with a nice 312. Some years later we had that 283 and powerglide tranny combo in a '67 Beaumont.
However, our current little VW puts out 292 hp from a 2000 cc (122 cubic inches) engine, has AWD, different driving modes for shift-points, suspension, steering, etc., and stock does 13 second 1/4 miles while using about 1/2 the gas of the oldies!
But, I still miss the sound of those V8's.
