Not sure why this car was parked in the blue zone.

Clearly not a full ferry.

Figuring at 75’ Monstro has to pay nearly $500, imagine what it costs for a B double at around 105’.

Well, just got back from Nanaimo to Horseshoe Bay - seniors are free as foot passengers Mon - Thurs, so cost nothing!

It was the last run of the day, and the lower vehicle deck was only about half full.

By the way, you know they charge buy the foot for vehicles with trailers. Not sure what private vehicles get charged, but for Monstro with a 55’ trailer (about 75’ overall length) it is nearly $500 each way.

That’s a lot of moolah.
We Canucks don't give nuttin away. Non commercial rate is $57.50 for the first 20 feet ($2.875/ft) and $6.50/ft over that. Tsawassen to Schwartz Bay is $161.50 for me. If I was a "big fella" 36 ft would cost $238.32. If my rig was a 5th wheel combo of 75' it would cost ($57.50 + (55*6.50)) = $415.00. It's something to take into account when travelling, even for us plain folks.

I have a 17 ft 5th wheel (yeah, 17'3" to be exact). For the same accommodation inside the trailer, with a pull behind I would be 8 ft longer and it would cost an extra $52 for a total of $213.50 each way for a trip to the island. In our case, the ferry to Gabriola is another $42.50 round trip (one only pays to go TO the island, FROM island to mainland is no charge). To visit my sister in law on Gabriola, ferry fares alone are $365.50 round trip. Any time we visit we take our own bedroom because it's family rendezvous and there is no accommodation left in her house.

Ships in the fog. We get a number of days this time of year when we can hear the ships signalling their location in the fog.

That brings to mind how my Uncle Ed used to navigate narrow channels in the Varholm on "you can't see your hand in front of your face" foggy days. Use the horn and when the echos come back simultaneously you are in the middle of the channel. That wasn't his invention. Word has it that steamers used to use it in the 1800's on the We(s)t Coast of Canada.

Hi Racer

going by your photo the white truck is where its supposed to be.
Yes ferry charges are high ,but what choice do you have, the long way round might cost more

One stops where the loading attendants tell them to, usually no farther forward than the yellow line where the net is.

On this run there is only two other ways.

The BC ferry from Vancouver, a much longer trip, or the Washington State ferry from Seattle to Victoria, an even longer and more costly trip.

There are no bridges to the islands.

Over here on the East Coast to take the short cut across the Bay of Fundy from Digby to Saint John the rates are about the same

I don't know what the rates are to PEI. I know there is no charge to get on the Island and you pay the same fare to get off the Island regardless if you use the ferry or the bridge

Going to Newfoundland the rate for anything over 60 ft is $975 and that doesn't include a cabin which is another $200 and meals. Plus the decks aren't as clean & smooth either with chains and tie downs everywhere

So you can get on PEI for free, but once there you have to pay a ransom to escape?

What a racket.

Sounds like they are hurting for island residents.

In BC, Gabriola Island makes more sense: You pay to get there, coming back to the mainland is no charge.

The government spin on it is that it is a "Toll". that helps to subsidise the Government owned ferries and upkeep of the bridge The last time I was over there it was $44 for a Car (no charge for the Occupants)
For Trucks I think they charge by the number of axles
