I seriously think that if civilization ends it will be vehicles like these that exist not the Mad Max style ones. What is amazing is the amount of tread on some of these the usually run the tires until the cords show.

This is one of two vehicles at this summer's South Fulton Antique Tractor Show, held in Vermont, IL, that was labeled a "Doodlebug." In the Random House Dictionary, one definition of the term is "any of various small, squat vehicles," but even though this is the smaller of the two, it really isn't what I would call small, though its profile could be called squat. It is based on a 1928 Ford Model AA 1-ton truck. Modifications include oversized tires, including tractor tires in the rear, and a totally open cab area.

When the Collings P-51C was here in Billings a ride was $2200! And there wasn't a shortage of riders.

It's more exotic than that - it's a Th!nk City. A great axample of why we don't make cars in Norway

Think Global - Wikipedia

To be fair, though, they were onto something, just a decade or so too early. And they missed the target by aiming too low tech-wise.

I Th!nk it is an ugly bucket of bolts.

Interesting note.

The 1910 Maxwell was an electric car. It had a useful range of 100 miles on a full charge.

I see the Th!nk also was rated at 100 miles on a charge.

Technology, for all it has brought mankind, seems to have failed us in that regard. For more than 100 years we don’t have much to show for our efforts.

Pity.

The 1898 Porsche P1 had about half of that. A doubling in 12 years, then

Yep, battery technology has moved surprisingly short in the last century. Maybe more in the last 20 years than the previous 80, though.

A Volkswagen on Rhine

K-3 with Pentax SMC-A 70-210mm f/4

The morning dew is slowly burning off as I took this photo of a long abandoned Volkswagen Beetle rusting away along Rhine Road in Indiana County Pennsylvania. The VW is thousands of miles and over fifty years removed form its birthplace in Germany. Somehow it seems appropriate that the old Bug rests along Rhine Road.

A hundred years ago electric vehicles were quite a thing. I used to have a set of books on how to maintain and repair electric vehicles that was published in 1917. There were at least a dozen different manufacturers that made electric cars, taxis, delivery trucks, and buses. There were even a couple of electric hearses pictured in the books.
